Comp Pro Med Chosen for Key Role

COMP PRO MED, INC. CHOSEN FOR KEY ROLE IN U.S. FUNDED, $15 BILLION HIV/AIDS INITIATIVE – CDC Contract Signed This Week

Santa Rosa, CA – October 3, 2005 – A Santa Rosa, California software company is now a key player in the fight against HIV and AIDS in Africa. Comp Pro Med, Inc. won a significant contract this week with the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to deploy computerized medical lab information systems in HIV/AIDS testing centers throughout Ethiopia. The contract calls for similar deployment throughout Africa and it is integral to the CDC initiative recently funded through the $15 billion President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR).

PEPFAR is intended for countries in Africa, as well as parts of Asia and the Caribbean. The U.S. has fought the spread of HIV/AIDS, and its deadly effects, here at home for decades. But experts warn that a worldwide pandemic will overwhelm our previous experience with this disease, if not addressed now. More than 90 percent of the world’s estimated 40 million HIV sufferers live in sub-Saharan Africa, where more than 5,000 people per day die of the virus.

Laboratory Information System Chosen for Key Role

Comp Pro Med has been a provider of software systems to medical laboratories in the U.S. since 1981. During the last decade, the company donated its software product, the Polytech™ Laboratory Information System, along with training, to support early medical lab initiatives in the countries of Eritrea and Ethiopia. Comp Pro Med’s presence and proven track record in those countries made the company a leading candidate for consideration by the CDC. The contract calls for installation in 125 labs in Ethiopia, expanding to 14 other countries in Africa.

“The multiple redundancies of the Polytech System are a big attraction for us,” said Tamrat Bekele, an Ethiopian laboratory developer also associated with the contract. “These redundancies protect us from power failures and other disruptions. Our work is too important to suffer data loss. The System’s reporting and compilation capabilities are also critical to us and the CDC in order to have immediate results, do trending, build databases and have good communications.” Bekele went on to say that the physicians of Ethiopia are extremely happy to hear about the System. “There is no guesswork now. Reporting will occur two times a day instead of once every two months. The quality of care is being improved immeasurably.”

“Winning this contract was never a deliberate campaign on our part,” said CEO and Founder, Jeff Fisher. “We started out wanting to do good for others and somehow all those efforts led us here. This is a global problem and we’re just grateful we can play a small part in its solution.
