HIV/AIDS and the Children of Africa

Up to two thousand babies each day are infected with HIV worldwide, during pregnancy, birth or breast feeding. Most of these will die before age five.

More than 5000 people die each day in sub-Saharan Africa. A significant percentage of these individuals leave orphans behind. The Sisters of Charity are working constantly throughout Africa to find adoptive parents.

Yet primitive testing methods have resulted in a misdiagnosis of thousands of orphans. A baby born from a mother with HIV/AIDS will have the HIV antibody. And although an uninfected baby will lose this antibody within a few months, potential adoptive parents are discouraged from choosing this healthy child because they do not have accurate information.

New funding will create more, well equipped medical labs able to administer the HIV DNA PCR test and reveal a true diagnosis.
